We're pleased to announce the next major release v3 of deviceOwl - an App to help you efficiently identify smart devices and covert consumer surveillance devices using AI computer vision.
DeviceOwl is a "point-and-shoot" hardware device scanner that visually comprehends and identifies thousands of popular consumer smart devices and covert spy cameras, helping individuals to identify devices, understand their sensory capabilities, and the resulting privacy implications.
Enhancements in this release focus heavily on improving the performance & reliability of deviceOwl and making it easier to use.

On Demand Device Knowledge Updates
On Demand updates enable deviceOwl to check devices more efficiently, without having to fully update it's device knowledge. After you select a device type, deviceOwl checks with Entropic Labs to see what knowledge it needs, and asks you to update. For example, if you select "Thermostat", deviceOwl will only retrieve the knowledge it needs to check thermostats.
This saves you time when checking devices and is more efficient, since deviceOwl is only retrieving the device knowledge needed to check the selected device type.
Prepare for Travel
Though deviceOwl no longer needs to fully update it's device knowledge before checking devices, you may still prefer a full update for convenience, or if you aren't going to have access to the Internet for a while - for example when travelling.
Use the "Prepare for Travel" option to perform a full update. A faster WiFi connection is recommended, as the device knowledge is extensive!
Prepare for Travel is available with a subscription to Advanced Edition.
Device Checking Performance Enhancements
The entire device checking process has been optimized, including reducing the amount of time you need to wait when starting device checking, and reducing the amount of memory needed by the AI image analysis while checking devices.
Resumable Device Knowledge Updates
To help reduce the amount of time to retrieve device knowledge, deviceOwl can now resume device knowledge updates may have been interrupted by losing your Internet connection during an update.
If you're in an area with poor Internet reliability or speed, this can help you successfully retrieve device knowledge in situations where the Internet connection is repeatedly failing.
User Interface Enhancements & Bug Fixes
We've included minor updates to some icons and logos, and we've enhanced the way user prompts are displayed. We've also included many other bug fixes.
